| Change from 40 to 50? | (50 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = +25% |
| 1200 plus 18%? | 1200 × 1.18 = 1416 |
| 1200 minus 18%? | 1200 × 0.82 = 984 |
Good to know
- A rise from 40 to 50 is a 25% increase, but a fall from 50 back to 40 is a 20% decrease — the base changes.
- Removing a percentage is not the inverse of adding one: taking 20% off 100 gives 80, but adding 20% to 80 gives 96.
